Mount Sinai Queens celebrates its expanded and upgraded Stavros Niarchos Foundation Emergency Department (ED)

Mount Sinai Queens welcomed community residents to its expanded and upgraded Stavros Niarchos Foundation Emergency Department (ED), located on the corner of Crescent Street and 30th Road.

The ED, nearly five times the size of its predecessor, allows the hospital to grow with the communities of western Queens and beyond as they undergo sustained residential and commercial development. The new ED is the first step in the opening of the $175 million Mount Sinai Queens expansion project, which broke ground in October 2013.  Subsequent phases will open soon, including a new outpatient Imaging center; a large, multi-specialty physician practice to be called Mount Sinai Doctors, Queens; new, expanded operating rooms; and an Interventional Radiology Suite.

“We are excited and honored to begin opening this state-of-the-art building for our community and borough,” said Caryn A. Schwab, Executive Director, Mount Sinai Queens. “We want to deliver the best care for our residents and in this building, they will get it.  I’m grateful to Mount Sinai leadership, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, our elected officials, and our community partners who helped make this project a reality.”

The 20,000-square-foot ED, with a glass-enclosed, expansive entrance and waiting area, features a combination of private rooms and patient bays, a separate pediatric emergency area with a family-friendly waiting room, a cardiac and critical care resuscitation room, bariatric- and dialysis-capable rooms, and a separate covered ambulance entrance. Wi-Fi service is available throughout the ED, and individual televisions are at all bedsides for patients.  The Mount Sinai Queens ED treated more than 51,000 patients in 2015.

Key attributes of this new ED include the following:

• A design which facilitates bedside registration, thereby minimizing waiting and maximizing through-put. Key to this approach is the split flow design with direct access from the entry to a “Fast Track” unit with a mix of stretcher and recliner stations.
• The acute care portion of the ED is designed on a modular basis, where one area can be shut down during slow periods.
• Dedicated radiology and a CT unit are provided in the ED.
• An emphasis on private rooms, including specialty rooms including OB/GYN, Dialysis, and Isolation Rooms
• A Pediatric ED unit is provided adjacent to the acute entry with separate Peds waiting treatment bays and a Pediatric Isolation Room.
• Creation of a mid-block ambulance drive-thru and drop-off, greatly improving flow and relieving congestion on this tight urban site.
